Parenting Helps Me Become a Better Leader, Says Phil Wilkins

Phil Wilkins heads up the Community Engagement and Social Determinants at ModivCare, a company that provides patient transportation, meal delivery, personal in-home care and monitoring devices.

Being a company leader, a former franchisee and diversity consultant, Phil is an experienced business leader, but that experience is nothing like what he’s learned being a dad to his sons, including his eldest, Jordan.

He described his pride and joy as a father in a Linkedin post that caught my attention.

In our interview, Phil shared with me his philosophy about parenting and how being a dad helps him become a better company leader. “If you don’t love or are not passionate about what you do, you are going to rot on the vine,” he said.

From our conversation, Phil talked about:

☘️ The lessons his sons have taught him.

☘️ How he guided Jordan to identify his passion.

☘️ The mindset he applies as a parent in his leadership role

☘️ The distinction between parenting and leadership.

☘️ Empathy and patience are needed in leadership.

☘️ Taking positive, supportive actions for employees who are going through tough times at home, while helping them get back on track at work.

☘️ Building loyalty and trust with employees.

☘️ The importance of understanding social determinants to improve lives.
